What is a package registry?

How SwiftPM package registries work, and why they beat Git-based dependency resolution.

A standard, not a fork

A Swift package registry implements SE-0292 — the official SwiftPM standard for downloading packages over an HTTP API instead of cloning Git repositories. Swift Registry is a hosted implementation of that standard.

Immutable, verifiable releases

Each published version is a sealed source archive with a SHA-256 checksum. Once published, a version never changes — so yesterday's 1.2.0 is byte-for-byte today's 1.2.0.

Package identifiers

Instead of a Git URL, each package has a scope.name identifier (for example acme.networkkit). SwiftPM resolves that identifier to a versioned artifact from the registry.

Faster, auditable resolution

Resolving downloads cached artifacts instead of performing full Git clones, and every publish is recorded — useful for CI speed and supply-chain review.
